(Unit 8) Topic 6: Once Upon a Time: Fairy Tales in the Early Childhood Classroom

2 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Story Structure

Topic 6 Page 9

Fairy tales are a great way to introduce how stories are structured to young children, as most fairy tales follow a predictable pattern. They have a beginning, middle and end as well as fairly simple plotlines for children to follow. Fairy tales can get children thinking about how to write organized stories with purpose.

Here is an example:

Jack and the Beanstalk

Beginning
A young boy named Jack is so poor he sells his cow for magic beans. He plants them and they grow into a huge beanstalk in the sky.
Middle
Jack climbs the stalk to find a castle and a giant. He steals the giant’s treasures.
End
Jack climbs down the beanstalk and chops it down, killing the giant. Draw pictures of each of these sections, showing students how to break up stories. Challenge them to do the same when writing in journals.
Other elements that can be introduced to children include:
  • Characters – Who is in the story?
  • Setting – Where does the story take place?
  • Problem – What went wrong?
  • Solution – How things got fixed.
  • Author – Who wrote the story?
  • Illustrator – Who drew the pictures?
