Objectives:
  • Child will develop large motor skills
  • Child will experience a new sensory activity    
CDA Competency Standard:  
II.4.3a
Activities and materials encourage children to develop their senses
  1. Sight, sound, smell, taste and touch experiences are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities ​​
II.4.1a
Activities, materials and equipment encourage children of varying abilities to develop their large muscles.
 a) Gross motor skills are encouraged through developmentally appropriate materials, equipment and indoor/outdoor activities
Materials: 
  • Three Billy Goats Gruff board book
  • Brown butcher paper
  • Two large poster boards
  • Various materials that are safe for children to walk and crawl on such as:
    • Fabrics such as velvet, wool, felt, satin, etc.
    • Foam pieces
    • Carpet squares
Procedure:  
  1. Affix crawling materials to poster board securely with hot glue or strong tape.
  2. Read Three Billy Goats Gruff to the children, dramatizing the voices and the events in the story.
  3. Lay a large strip of brown butcher paper (the bridge) on the floor and secure it. Put one poster board on one side and the other on the opposite side.
  4. Encourage babies to crawl from one side of the bridge to the other and quote the fairy tale while they do so, reacting appropriately to baby’s actions.
  5. Encourage toddlers to crawl, hop, walk, or roll to the other side of the bridge to exercise large muscle groups!

Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the child’s reaction to the new textures and their large muscle development.
