Objectives:
  • Child will experience a new sensory activity 
CDA Competency Standard:  
II.6.1b
Materials promote early literacy
  1. Developmentally appropriate books are available   
Materials: 
  • The Princess and the Pea board book 
  • About 20 felt squares in assorted colors all cut to the same size (we recommend 8” by 8”)
  • Several green poms poms for “peas”
  • Optional: Princess (or other) figurine .  
Procedure:  
  1. Read The Princess and the Pea to the children, dramatizing the voices and the events in the story.
  2. Encourage children to stack felt squares and include a pom pom “pea” in the stack.
  3. When they are done stacking, ask them to find the pea.  

Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the child’s reaction to the materials and elements of the story.
