Age Group: 
  • Preschool  
* Lesson plan objectives and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with school-age children.

Objectives:
  • Child will practice measuring in non-standard units

CDA Competency Standard:  
II.5.3a
  • Candidate’s interactions promote children’s thinking and problem solving
    • a) Facilitates children’s thinking and creative problem-solving skills

Materials: 
  • construction paper
  • scissors
  • glue
  • yarn
  • small cubes

Procedure: 
  1. Encourage students to create Rapunzel using construction paper, scissors and glue. Instruct them to use the yarn for her hair. Students can make her hair as long or short as they desire.
  2. When dry, ask students to measure the length of the hair using small manipulative cubes.    

Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the child’s measuring abilities. Were they able to line the cubes up and count to correctly measure?
