The Federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act defines gifted and talented students as “Students, children, or youth who give evidence of high achievement capability in areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership capacity, or in specific academic fields, and who need services and activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to fully develop those capabilities.” [Title IX, Part A, Definition 22. (2002)] Many states and districts follow the federal definition.

• Apparent in many domains such as art, math, or science
• Able to occur in multiple domains
• In every demographic imaginable
• Sometimes hard to define and identify

• Only apparent in academic domains. It can occur in areas such as leadership, creativity, or social interactions
• Only suited for certain ethnic or racial groups
• A one-size-fits-all category
• Only measured by standardized tests or classroom assessments

Characteristics and Traits of Gifted Students

Gifted students often:

• Are perfectionist and idealistic
• Are highly sensitive
• Are rapid learners
• Have a highly developed sense of curiosity
• Are advanced in terms of vocabulary and sentence structure
• Have an excellent memory
• Make connections between unlikely ideas or concepts
• May daydream or be in their “own world”
• Multitask or work asynchronously ​
