​All children are entitled to an appropriate education and gifted children are no different. Many educators are accustomed to students that achieve at or below grade level and are unsure how to meet the needs of gifted students. Surprisingly, though, it is very similar to the manner in which you adapt for underachieving children. Instead of lowering the level of an activity, make it more challenging or add extensions that play to the child’s strengths.  
According to the British Columbia Ministry of Education, there are several strategies that are successful with adapting instruction for gifted children. These strategies all relate to different areas of education for the student and are categorized thusly: 
  • The content of the curriculum. (What the student studies.)
  • The processes that engage the students. (How the student works with information.)
  • The products of their studies. (How students represent what they know.)
  • The learning environment.
​Let’s break it down by area and discuss some useful strategies that can work in these areas for gifted children.
