School Readiness

One of the biggest factors that is considered in a preschool child’s development is whether or not they are ready to enter kindergarten on time. With many kindergarten options being available parents and educators should work as a team to not only determine a child’s school readiness but also to support those skills in preschool. Every preschool program is different but one of the overarching goals of preschool is usually school readiness. Districts, states, types of schools, and individual students will vary widely but most school readiness objectives are based on appropriate developmental guidelines for 5 year-olds.
School readiness takes into consideration the social and emotional, cognitive, physical, and language milestones of children being ready to enter kindergarten. Keeping these milestones in mind and considering the goals of kindergarten and kindergarten readiness can give educators a great foundation to help support individual skills and development.
Some common school readiness signs (from the Washington State Department of Early Learning):
  • I know how to use the restroom.
  • I know my full name, my phone number and address, and my parents’ or caregivers’ names.
  • I know how to share with other children and wait my turn.
  • I can sit and listen to a story.
  • When I am upset, I know my feelings are OK and I know ways to calm myself down.
  • I can follow simple directions.
  • I know how to take care of my body by brushing my teeth, washing my hands and covering my mouth when I cough or sneeze.
  • I know how to find a safe adult if I need help.
  • I have plenty of chances each day to run, jump, and dance and throw balls.
  • I have plenty of chances each day to use my hands to do things like button my shirt, tie a knot and use crayons or scissors.
