(Unit 8) Topic 1: The Whole Child

4 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Family Partnerships and Development

Topic 1 Page 27

According to the Ontario Early Childhood Department “early development takes place in the context of families and communities and is shaped by the day-to-day experiences and environments of early life. The steady drip of daily life (Barr, 2001) establishes pathways for lifelong learning, behavior and health that are inextricably linked to the development of the whole child.” Every child learns and develops at their own rate, but the family and community support also impact this learning and development negatively or positively.
Families and caregivers can support early childhood brain development by creating a safe and nurturing environment for development to occur. Beyond brain development elements we begin to dive into deliberate teaching, supporting, and evaluation of certain skills and developmental milestones. A crawling infant can be encouraged to master their skills and become more mobile and exploratory through adult interactions and planned activities. A preschooler in a print rich environment will pick up early literacy skills and build on them as they develop more. Families often take the role of supporting their children’s development but there can be circumstances that challenge this norm. Often in these cases, community services and educational programs are provided to help fill the gap and support healthy development.
