(Unit 8) Topic 1: The Whole Child

4 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Children are Playful by Nature

Topic 1 Page 14

Their earliest experiences exploring with their senses lead them to play, first by themselves and eventually with others.

Trevor’s teacher has recognized that supporting his pretend activities keeps him engaged for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. She pretends right along with him, asking him to “bake some cookies” or to “go grocery shopping” for her. She gives him paper and crayons so that he can pretend to write grocery lists. The teacher encourages Trevor to count how many items he has placed in his toy shopping cart. She accepts his scribbles and letter-like shapes as his writing (appropriate for 4-year-olds) and helps him when the numbers get a little mixed up.
During preschool years, a child’s vocabulary grows and develops as they play together with friends and interact with adults. Educators have the opportunity to support language development through play; they can do this by asking questions, encouraging conversation and introducing unfamiliar words. The context of play allows for this to happen in a natural way and learning is enhanced as it is enjoyable and relevant to the child’s interests.
