(Unit 8) Topic 1: The Whole Child

4 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Preschool Development

Topic 1 Page 9

Developmental milestones help educators to understand and recognize typical ages and stages of development for children. Milestones are not rigid rules for when a child should develop. Milestones provide a guide for when to expect certain skills or behaviors to emerge in young children based on cognitive, fine motor, gross motor, speech, and social-emotional development. You can use your knowledge of these milestones to meet the preschoolers needs in your program.
Preschool children are advancing in their development after perfecting skills of many kinds throughout their first three years of life. In the preschool age range (3-5 years of age) children are showing intelligent reactions, strong opinions, and a preference for social play and interaction.
By making up a story about being a fireman, this boy is showing more creativity in his pretend play. This is a 4-year social/emotional milestone.

Preschoolers want to show their independence by touching, tasting, smelling, and testing things for themselves. The best way to describe a preschooler is lots of energy!
