(Unit 8) Topic 1: The Whole Child

4 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Tummy Time Timeline

Topic 1 Page 17

Less Than a Month
Most tummy time at this age will be spent cheek down. The infant’s knees will be under their hips, making it so their stomach does not touch the ground. Their arms will be bent near their shoulders. Tummy time should only last about 1 to 2 minutes at a time.
One to Two Months
The infant will begin to pick up their head to look around. Their head may bob or look unsteady. They will be able to turn their head now. They should begin to straighten and uncurl their body so that their stomach actually touches the ground.
Three Months
The child will begin to lift their head even higher (45-90 degrees), and will not be as wobbly. They will begin to press their weight into their forearms, lifting their shoulders and chest.
Four Months
Baby will be able to hold head at a 90 degree angle with stability. They can keep their chest lifted as they look down at objects. They may try lifting arms or legs off the ground. By this point, their tummy time tolerance should be upwards of 5 to 10 minutes at a time.
Five Months
The child will begin to grab for objects that are near them. They may begin to roll onto their sides with control and will begin to try pushing into strengthened arms to lift their chest off of the ground.
Six Months and Beyond
Baby will begin to push themselves backwards. They can start to pivot their entire bodies to the right and left. The child can roll from their back onto their stomach and back. Prepare for crawling in the next month or two!
