4 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Toddler Development

Topic 1 Page 16

Toddlers are still developing rapidly and are experiencing a good deal of growth and change. They have made major strides to become more independent and coordinated but they do still have a lot to develop. By 13 months many toddlers can usually walk alone without adult support, have some regular vocabulary, and can help with dressing or undressing themselves. By 18 months children develop a basic understanding of spatial relationships, repeat words they hear, and can throw a ball without much trouble.
Toddlers thrive in places where they can feel secure, express their drive to learn, and build their competence. They rely on adults for nurturance and guidance as they learn. When toddlers receive care in a relationship that consistently meets their physical and emotional needs, that relationship becomes a base for exploration and discovery.
